Running a successful dog grooming business is a good grounding in getting to see dogs and their owners interacting and relating to each other on a daily basis. Marilyn Burnham decided to put her experiences and wealth of knowledge and her obvious passion for dogs into her acclaimed ‘Dog Owners Boot Camp’ book.
What strikes me about this book and the author is the wealth of experience and exposure to dogs that Marilyn Burnham has been able to develop. In her words she often sees 25-30 dogs and their owners on a daily basis. This is a crucial point in seeing the value and the relevance of this book.
Dog Owners Boot Camp is promoted as the only dog training book that trains owners and their dogs. The author has made the connection that the dog training relationship is dependent on the ability and awareness of the dog owner. So there is a fair amount of dog psychology here in this book.
Marilyn Burnham states that dogs want to please, but are often sent mixed messages by their owners who simply do not know what and how to effectively communicate and train their dog. Fortunately Dog Owners Boot Camp is a book that takes this dog psychology – and human psychology into account. This is what distinguishes this book from many others on the market today.
Dr Steve Kornfeld (DVM) a practicing veterinarian (and renowned personal coach to veterinarians) for over 14 years gives a glowing endorsement of this book. To paraphrase much of what he says, he states that the book makes the distinction that dog training is about being a dogs best friend and how the book captures the essence of owning, caring, training and enjoying your dog.

Dog Owners Boot Camp isn’t just another dog training book. Dog psychology and indeed human psychology is acknowledged here in the training relationship that makes this a valuable edition to your dog training library. Marilyn Burnham delivers a book that is derived and inspired from a professional dog groomers perspective working in a busy successful dog grooming business.
As with any book or program review I do, I like to look at areas that perhaps need improvement or further explanation. I think that stating the benefit of immediate results in any dog training program is a little over the top. This book is very good but it is not about magic tricks or instant results – although results can come quite quickly, they are not immediate.
It has often been said that a hairdresser is a good alternative to a psychologist. In this instance, it is easy to draw that comparison to the dog training domain. When it comes to understanding the relationship and dynamics between and owner and his or her dog, one only has to look for your local dog groomer to get a good insight of this relationship in action. They deal with hundreds of dogs and owners a week.
Marilyn Burnhams Dog Owners Boot Camp will satisfy those who are seeking to understand the dog training relationship explanation. The book, and the added bonuses, are packed full of relevant content. The focus in this book on the dog and owner relationship and dog psychology, plus the obvious experience demonstrated here, means this book comes highly recommended.
